March 2008 Archives

SO, a deserved 1-0 to the Reds and city bragging rights to us for the second time this season.
Truth be told, it should have been a lot more comfortable.
I don't think 3-0 would have flattered us.

DERBY DAY

By Luke Traynor on Mar 28, 08 10:16 AM in Pre Match

LIVERPOOL and Everton approach this weekend's Merseyside Derby with their tails somewhat between their legs.
Some chastening draws or defeats have taken the wind out of the sails of barnstorming runs embarked on by both teams.
But that shouldn't hide the fact that this is one of the most important Red/Blue fixtures for years.

BENNETT BLUNDERS

By Luke Traynor on Mar 24, 08 12:32 PM in Referees

Steve Bennett produced a worryingly inept display on Sunday afternoon.
And before anyone interjects, a petulant Javier Mascherano let his side down massively as well.
If what happened at Old Trafford doesn't act as some kind of watershed for a new brand of adult and mature player behaviour and sensible grown up refereeing, then it's a huge opportunity gone begging.

BANNING THE BOUNCE

By Luke Traynor on Mar 15, 08 02:23 AM in Anfield

ANFIELD'S stewards hate the Torres Bounce.
The sight of a few hundred excited Reds jumping up and down to the most well-received song on the Kop for years has got them, or their employers rather, seething.

OWEN BASHING

By Luke Traynor on Mar 14, 08 11:49 PM in Past Players

MICHAEL Owen cut a disconsolate figure at Anfield the other week.
His mood was hardly helped by Liverpool's new deadly striking duo treating him to one of the Premiership's most irresistible displays of forward interplay this season.
I couldn't help feeling sorry for Michael, but surprisingly some Reds fans still foster resentment towards the former darling of the Kop.

DID Dirk discover his best position for us on Tuesday night?
I've always been a fairly strong critic of the Dutchman (his ability not is commitment), so when he produces the goods it's only right to acknowledge it.

ALL THINGS EURO

By Luke Traynor on Mar 14, 08 09:17 PM in Europe

IT'S DIFFICULT to say if we should be relatively happy with today's draw against The Gooners.
Certainly, with three other English teams in the draw, avoiding all of them would have been too much to ask for.

FERNANDO Torres last night became the first player to score back-to-back Anfield hat-tricks since 1946.
After the dark days of Cisse, Bellamy, Diouf, and the current crop, it's fantastic that the Reds have a genuine world-class forward leading the line.

ECHO AUTHORS

Luke Traynor Luke Traynor's first Reds recollection is staying up way past his bedtime as a six-year-old to watch Alan Kennedy caress the ball into the net against Roma to record a fourth European Cup. A decade and a half later, he reflects on the highs and lows of the current Anfield order.
