NEW RED BLOOD

By Luke Traynor on Apr 16, 08 02:21 PM in Transfer Talk

I GENUINELY believe that Liverpool are only a few top class players short of a title-winning squad.
As the summer break lurches into view (admittedly we've got some huge games before that) our thoughts naturally turn to the kind of talent that could be brought into Anfield to bring that consistency in the Premiership that we all crave.

My selections are largely English players, or foreigners who play in the Premiership.
Granted, you'll get more for your money shopping abroad, but the risk of landing a dud remains high and the chance of another Diouf, Cisse, Zenden, Pellegrino, Cheyrou or Diao slipping their way into Anfield's backdoor is too much to bear.
A new keeper to stand as Reina's deputy is a certainty as The Tange's erratic displays have surely earnt him an exit out of L4.
It's always a difficult shout to bring in a reserve keeper who is not quite good enough to get a starting place, but who will perform well enough when called upon.
With Carson and Kirkland it was never going to work as they were both good enough to command starting places in other Prem sides and so didn't fancy getting arse splinters on our subs bench.
Obviously, The Tange didn't fall into that category. When called upon, he was at best, chaotic.
Remember the flapping madness he transmitted to his defenders in front of him in the Havant game?

alves.jpg

DANIEL ALVES: OK, so he's been coveted by a lot clubs who have more pots of money than we do, and his valuation will probably be something ridiculous like £20m.
But if he can be persuaded to come to Anfield for some sort of realistic fee, what a buy this bloke would be.
When I first saw him play, I though he was an attacking winger, he had so much, pace and trickery.
We've been well-served with full backs of late, but with the admirable Steve Finnan perhaps not the player he was 12 months ago, a question mark still hangs over Aurelio, and with the very soild displays, but limited attacking showings of Arbeloa, it's maybe time for us to buy a genuine world class star for our full back berths.
Alves would fit the bill. Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd have long caught on to the flying full back trend (Eboue, Clichy, Cole, Evra) and they would be a massive weapon to overwhelm the stubborn blanket defences that frequently set up camp on the goaline at Anfield.

johnson.jpg

GLEN JOHNSON: This lad has had his fair share of problems, not least being caught by police stealing lavatory seats and taps from B & Q.
A common celebrity footballer offence, of course.
That said, he's got class and while he's not a defender through and through, he's a progressive full back in every sense.
Maybe play him at Anfield, and Arbeloa when we're playing away.

bentley.jpg

DAVID BENTLEY: I don't think all Reds will be convinced about this one, but we do need a talented winger as Kewell looks a dead cert to leave in the summer, and Pennant might not be too far behind.
That leaves Babel, and we all know he prefers to occupy a more central role.
For me, Bentley looks the business. Not a flyer in any respect, but good with both feet, capable of delivering great crosses, an excellent passer, a cracking dig on him and a little bit of attitude and bite to him that means he won't drift in and out of games.
Again, he'll probably be in the £15m bracket, but I think we could raise £30m in revenue with player sales, so we could have cash to play with.

quaresma.jpg

RICARDO QUARESMA: I'm not totally confident this bloke's right for us, but I can't help thinking he could be genuinely exciting and give us something similar to the Manc's Ronaldo.
He's obviously massively talented - some of the tricks and ball skills are breathtaking - and he was the only player who stood out when we played Porto recently in the Champions League.
Where he falls down is his attitude. He has an arrogant, egocentric air about him, a man who believes he is the star, and the star alone. (Geoff Boycott would have called him a show pony)
Maybe that's acceptable at a lower tier European club, but if you take that attitude to Anfield you'll fall flat on your backside.
Still, he's an out-and-out winger, something which Bentley is not, and if a disciplinarian like Benitez can read the riot act to him (much the same way Ferguson did with Ronaldo) we could be onto a winner.

berbatov.jpg

DIMITAR BERBATOV - We should move heaven and earth to get this guy. Total class.
A partnership of him and Torres...it works in every respect. Torres playing as the genuine no.9, Berbatov playing just off him. Flick ons, cute touches and goals.
It smacks of Keegan/Toshack...Rush/Dalglish. I can't see it not working.
Surely the Bulgarian has got fed up with yet another mid-table finish with perennial under achievers Spurs.
They've still got Bent sitting on the bench haven't they?
Some people moan that Berbatov is a hot and cold player, but take him to a bigger club and I think he makes that step up to perform every game.

defo.jpg

JERMAINE DEFOE: I've been carping on about the Reds getting hold of this pint-sized finisher for ages.
We missed a trick when he was sold to Portsmouth for a fee which was believed to be in the region of £6m. A steal.
Defoe has that crucial thing that every striker needs. Pace (something Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin haven't got)
He's a natural finisher and with service from the likes of Gerrard and Co he could bag a hatful in a team like Liverpool's.
Think of all those games we've drawn or lost despite dominating the game after passing up a host of presentable chances.
A proven scorer could have turned those one points into three.
Perhaps he's a bit too similar to Torres, but you can never have too much of a good thing. It's all about the goals.

Bentley would be a great signing for our right-side. Some mugs will give us our money back on Pennant and we'll get a big fee for Riise.

I think we'll struggle to get Barbatov unless we win the Champion's League tho.

Got to have a good, deep, sniff of that market la.

good blog luke, i enjoy debating who we should get in and get rid. its the one consolation of the closed season! agree with alves mate we do need more from our full backs. bentley, yes but would he set anfield alight? i like the look of this croatian modric- looks good on the ball and more creative than alonso, who i can see going this summer if we get a decent offer.
queresma- agree totally with you could be great if it wasn't for his attitude. we'll see...

There's only one lad I'm dreaming off at Anfield but not sure if he's already boxed off to go elsewhere. It's Arshavin, sort of inside left playing for Zenit St Peterberg. Anyone who saw him take apart Bayer Leverkeusen in the last round of the UEFA will know how good he is. Would be a cracking signing - anyone know if he's already going elsewhere? I know there's loads of interest in him. If he's not sorted, get going Rafa.

You had to remind us of the Havant performance ! From what I've seen of David Martin, I would have him step up (or sit down) to the bench. He looks solid and it would be progress. Whether he would accept that for long term would be disputable.
I'd like to see a cheeky bid for Walcott as the lad has pace.
I'm defo up for Berbatov, he is genuine quality and would certainly improve the squad.
Obviously though, any bids are going to be dependant on who's running the club. Maybe people wouldn't want to move to a club that is openly infighting. We need to get that sorted first I think.

How about a dart for Santa Cruz? 18 slotted in the Prem this season in an average team.
Good target man, decent in the air, great finisher, quite bit of skill too. That goal at Anfield was expertly taken.
££7m should do it.

Luke, if I had a pound for every time I'd heard a red say that I could buy the Americnas out and still have enough for Quaresma.
You are a long, long way off the title.

Luke said:

Naboo,

I still hold that view mate. I think the squad has been improved. In terms of centre midfield, centre half, goalkeeper and a couple of strikers were well supplied.
A few additions in centre forward, full back and winger areas would move us up another level.
But then, the other three will preumably have improved further, so its a game of catch up.

Hmm. A quick look at the current table (after 35 games) shows that really there is not much between the top four sides. LFC have a identical away record to Arsenal and both are almost identical to Man Utd's away record. Clearly, Chel$ki are far superior to the other three. LFC's home record is similar to Chel$ki's whilst Arsenal then Utd (with the best) are the pace setters.

In terms of points, LFC are currently 12 pts adrift of Utd and only 5 pts behind the gunners in 3rd (one could argue that had the admitted incorrect penalty decision vs Chel$ki not been given LFC would nw be 3 pts behind the gunners).

However, with 3 losses away each all for make a dead heat. With only 1 loss at home, Utd and LFC have one more than both Chel$ki & Arsenal on 1 loss apiece.

The real difference to an effective title challenge by LFC this season, was not so much one of personnel, but in a few too many draws particularly at home. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they dont. I doubt any but the most ardent Utd supporters would have guessed that Ronaldo would have had such a prolific season, scoring to date 10 more goals in the league than all of last season. Ditto for LFC fans with Torres in his debut season. The point here is that one or two players can make a difference, particularly when the margin for error is not that big.

However, on occassion, having the players is simply no guarantee of success either, then there is always the whims of a certain Miss Luck to ruin the best laid plans.

The evidence of the last few seasons shows that Rafa has got it right at home only to stumble away and then reversing this trend the following season. Should he get both right in the same season, then I see no reason to suggest that the point the author makes in his blog is not without merit.

I agree with most of things said here. Don't think we are far off that elusive title challenge.

Would love to see Berbatov or Santa Cruz at Anfield. They are playing in premiership and can handle it. Yes, they both go hot and cold but it could also have something to do with teams they play for.

There is a question mark of how much money LFC spent last year and the fact we did not challenge for the title. We still need to spend few more millions to challenge for the title.

Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal have a strong squads built over years and only required to buy one or two top players every year. We wasted money on "maybes" and have nothing to show for. Last year we spent serious money and got couple of serious player.

In next couple of years I can see following players (from top 25)leave Anfield in no particular order: Kewell, Alonso, Crouch, Riise, Finnan, Hypia, Pennant, Benayoun, Kuyt, Voronin. Who are the replacments is anyone's guess.

Naboo the Magnificent said:

A genuinely compelling argument Mr Spock. I do not doubt Liverpool will push United and Chelski harder next year. Dare I even say that a strikeforce of Torres and Villa could even mean title time ker-ching.

But please, a red bemoaning penalty luck?

RICARDO QUARESMA WOULD BE A GREAT BUY (IF WE KEEP HIS FEET ON THE GROUND AND HE ADDOPS THE "TEAM" MENTALITY THAT WE HAVE. HE LOOKS LIKE A RONALDO THAT CAN TACKLE.
WE ARE LINKED TO RAFINHA AND ACCORDING TO SOME REPORTS THAT IS ALREADY A DONE DEAL.
MODRIC IS ANOTHER PLAYER THAT INTERESTS ME,ALTHO IN HONESTY I KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THIS PLAYER THERE HAS BEEN GREAT REPORTS ON HIM.
AND HOW ABOUT LAHM FROM MUNICH, WANTS TO LEAVE IN THE SUMMER? YOUNG ATTACKING WING BACK?

Doigy said:

Just how did Spurs manage to sign Luka Modric? Guttin!

He was probably persuaded by the "Big Smoke" and (no doubt) massive pay packet, but you have to wonder what the outcome would have been if LFC had Riuven as a transfer negotiator:

"Get down to Liverpool ya t*t, it's a beast lad, get onto it!"

:o)
