SHOCK TACTICS
ROBBIE Keane must wonder who the hell he's signed for.
The centre forward is being told to play as a midfielder, as a left winger, there are balls whistling past his earlobes, and he hardly got one shred of decent service to him all afternoon.
That said, Liverpool fans must wonder who the hell we've brought.
Four yards clear, running in on goal, the supposed lightning quick frontman gets caught by that football legend Nigel Reo-Coker and limps a gilt-edged chance wide.
Supporting Liverpool these days seems to be an increasingly baffling experience.
When the selections seem obvious, when the formation that best suits the players we have at our disposal appears straightforward, something completely different happens.
Most Reds fans were looking quizically towards Rafa all Sunday afternoon.
It's generally accepted that Liverpool's toothless displays in the attacking third is generally down to a lack of width and a complete lack of balls delivered into the box.
Yet, here we have Ryan Babel fit, back from the Olympics, and creator of the one moment of quality that brought a goal against Standard Liege getting a dead arse on the bench.
But worry not, we have the pace, tricky dribbling and crossing ability of Lucas teasing Villa down the left wing.
That was the first baffling decision of the day. True to form, the Brazilian produced nothing of note that should warrant his inclusion in the side.
Onto Robbie Keane, I was getting increasingly getting mixed up identifying the squat forms of Keane and Mascherano as they both seemed to be operating in the same sort of areas.
The centre forward and the central midfielder.
Keane must be perplexed. It didn't exactly help that when a great chance fell his way, his quick off the mark pace all but disappeared and he seemed more concerned about Reo Coker walloping him with a challenge than pushing the ball on, seeing the whites of Friedel's eyes and slotting past him.
The worrying injury to Torres was an ideal opportunity for Rafa to pair his new £20m centre forward and his £10m centre forward (that's Kuyt in case we've forgotten) who was stationed on the right wing, and get them playing in tandem in positions they are accustomed to.
The answer? Nope. Let's keep those square pegs in round holes and throw this untried, raw, teenage boy onto the pitch and maintain our unfamiliar shape.
Baffling. It was if Rafa was determined to prove that the system he started out with could, must, should work. Well, it didn't.
Ngog tried hard but he shouldn't have been exposed to a high-profile game like that.
It's not often that I find myself nodding my head in agreement at the Sky pundits, but everything Hoddle and Redknapp said on Sunday was pretty much spot on.
Particularly about Alonso. With Gerrard out, this was time for the Spaniard to emerge from Stevie's shadow, get further up the park, and to start hurting teams in the last third.
It's safe to say he didn't fancy that too much, And while he had a lot of touches of the ball, they were ineffectual sideways or backward shuffles that Barry & Co had no problem repelling all day.
It's this kind of display from Alonso that has left many Reds giving up the ghost with him.
Mascherano had a tenacious game, but he's not picked to create. In a way, I could understand Kuyt's selection as his workrate at one of the toughest away grounds to visit probably just about warranted his inclusion.
Lucas instead of Babel was inexplicable. Increasingly, it's getting harder and harder to justify the Brazilian's place in the squad, never mind the side.
Another frustration was the non-emergence of El-Zhar, the one bright spark to come off the bench in most of our games this season.
Benayoun and not the in-form Moroccan, who is full of confidence? Very strange.
The sooner Riera gets on a Red shirt the better and let's pray to the Lord Mighty On High that he has some kind of decent ability, has pace and can cross a ball.
At the back, Skrtel and Carragher were both commendable and they only thing we can take from the game, apart from a point, is that we were tough to break down and tough to beat.
Surpringly Arbeloa was fairly solid (he tends to thrive in these cagey affairs), but the display of Dossena was another major cause for concern.
Either we've bought a duffer, or Rafa is telling him to check his runs down the left-hand side. But where is the raiding full back cum winger we thought we'd purchased?
This man was supposed to be comfortable reaching the byline and slinging high quality balls over. He treated the ball like a hot potato. Every time it was at his feet, he knocked it back. Knocked it back. Almost sent me to sleep.
He reminds me a bit of Julian Dicks which is not a good thing.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who will say that a point away at Villa is a good result all told. And they may well take points of Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal at Villa Park this season.
But it's the lack of belief, positivity and willingness to accept a point from this Liverpool side which is most galling.
Play like this and we won't be getting much from Man Utd at Anfield or Marseille away.

Not sure what Rafa is up to. his selections just continue to perplex me. bring back those heady days of fowler macca collymore and co, at least the games were good to watch!
we're joint top for f***s sake! not lost a game, two tough aways. teams will struggle at villa.
results while palying toss. sign of a good team. all is well boys.
the displays arent great but as PD muse says, we are in good shape table wise so lets give it some time and let these lads bed in.
I am reminded of the season we started well under houlier only to allow an anti-red media to undermine our confidence. lets get the results and hopefully the form will follow
The team's so one dimensional I dug out a pair 3D glasses I got free with Nightmare on Elm Street 14 when I was about 10.
Sunday was scarier though.
At least Freddy Krueger tried to skin a man once in a while.
The players look acutely aware of their inability - and so they should, the squad's punctuated with dross.
There's no enthusiasm, verve, belief or balls.
And I hate to criticise Rafa but it all stems from one man.
I don't think he can see the wood for the trees.
He's starting to betray Houilliersque desperation - it was never a penalty.
Agree with all you say, its increasingly frustrating being a red, 3 games I have been to this season already and watched yesterday on TV, haven’t enjoyed one game, you do wonder if its worth the money, look at the support again yesterday, fans paying hard earned money and they are rewarded with a set up like that.
All the more confusing when you think if we win we go top, early days yes but sitting top two points clear it still nice, also playing Man u next week we could afford a draw.
Every game so far keane off and kuyt up front, logic would suggest torres off, kuyt up with keane and el zar on the right, but no rafa does something completely different. Just cant work it out.
Keane id the new crouch lets mess him around as much as possible.
If rafa was running a proper business he would be in court every five minutes, look at how Finnan and Alonso have been treated of late, Rafa’s man management is a joke, people will point that we are joint top but this just doesnt feel right.
Cmon you reds.
i agree i'm totally baffled by the selection. i anticipated this and put dossena and aurelio in my fantasy rafa team to hedge my bets as i had no idea who he would go with in midfield. villa is a tough place to go to and i doubt many teams this season will come away with a point but i felt we had a goal in us in the second half and contrary to your blog i though dossena had a good game. I thought he got forward loads and delivered a few decent balls into the box (for a full back anyway) its the complete lack of midfield width that pisses me off!
no pen, bit desperate that from rafa. just a sh*** finish from our wonder boy. (!)
Not sure why anyone is surprised. We have too many average players (someone tell me how Ngoog and Lucas are playing for Liverpool) either being played out of position or struggling in some uncomfortable role, and the manager just can't help but tinker with things. And the more desperate he becomes the more baffling the tinkering.
I thought we actually started quite well yesterday and had them on the backfoot higher up the pitch, then all of a sudden Keane is moved to the left wing and we lose all shape and momentum. It was like Benitez wasn't even watching the game and was sticking to some pre-meditated gameplan, whether it weas working or not. After that the game was just a blur and a mish mash of baffling tactics and substitions that left me feeling numb.
I fear where we would be without a good work ethic and strong defence, lead by the imperious Jamie Carragher. How many times can he keep bailing the manager out for a cautious approach?
The frustrating thing is when we stick to a tried and tested system and positive style of football, we're a match for anyone. But the manager is his own worst enemy and either too arrogant or stubborn to change.
Sorry to say, but it has all the hallmarks of Houllier.
spot on cally.
yeah, i was pleased in the first ten, we were smooth and totally in charge then it all went to pot.
lucas should never be a lpool player, what the hell does he offer?
and yes again, benitez is getting suspiciously like houllier.
Hertha Berlin for 12 months http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N161135080901-1630.htm And Riera is in the bag, see what happens, although Rafa's comment is scary "He's a left footer who normally plays on the left wing,..." should this be ready as "He's a left footer who normally plays on the left wing, but from now on I'm going to play him at right back?" Gash. http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N161096080901-1740.htm
