TORRES TO THE RESCUE

RAFA KEANE.jpg

WITH 80 MINUTES on the clock at the Stadium of Light, I might as well have just copy and pasted my blog after the Standard Liege game, posted it under the heading 'Sunderland Game', and nobody would have been any the wiser.
Fortunately, the best striker in the world popped up to spare our ever increasing blushes on Saturday evening.
It's dropped points away at mid-table sides like Sunderland that has prevented us from getting close to Man Utd and Chelsea in recent years.
And I'd go so far to say that Torres's thumping strike was massive, already, in terms of our season.

The similarities with the game in Belgium were worrying. First of all, a couple of things about the team selection raised eyebrows.
Xabi, one of our few successes from midweek was on the bench, a promising, but still clearly short 20-year-old centre-mid in his place? Rafa claimed Xabi had a dead leg...I didn't notice much towards the end of Liege myself.
Agger out, and Sami in, although Agger did look unfit in Europe.
The first half was pretty dire. No penetration, an inability to keep the ball, players pannicking under pressure, a chronic lack of width. We could go on.
One thing that concerns is the growing realisation that Dirk Kuyt is Rafa's first option when it comes to right midfield. With Keane signed, the chances of Dirk ever getting a game up front are virtually nil.
Voronin looks like more likely to score than the Dutchman at present.
Benayoun could have the words 'I am weak' tattooed on his forehead, and Arbeloa picked up his obligatory booking which his annoying short tuggings and little nicks usually deserve.
The less said about the first 45 minutes the better.

plessis.jpg

The switch at half-time (Alonso for Plessis) was an obvious one, and it says a lot for the complete no-show of the first half that the Spaniard easily walked off with the Man of the Match bubbly having spent 50% less time on the pitch.
Things just looked a lot more cohesive with him in the middle. We were suddenly moving the ball quicker, we had possesion of the ball in more dangerous areas and we started to have the bulk of play, even if that was in a fairly unconvincing way.
It's time we stopped bigging up new, young players above their station. Plessis is a long way from being a first team players for us, has anybody else noticed that strange body shape he has when passing the ball?
Very stiff, rigid, and a weird shovelling technique when he addresses the ball. Yes, the lad is young, but he's not that young. He'll be 21 in March.
Twenty's not that young for a Premiership footballer any more. Seventeen is young, when players like Owen and Rooney were setting the world alight. If you're not looking like a real talent at 20, then I'm not sure you're ever going to be a real talent.

hyppia.jpg

Back to Alonso, he was the best player on the park by a mile, and he's convinced me (a serial Alonso basher for the last 18 months!) that we MUST keep him. {still, Barry was great for Villa against Man City wasn't he? ;-)}
There was nothing spectacular from Xabi, that 70 yard shot apart, but everything was done so very effectively and efficiently. The first time volleyed pass to Torres for the goal a case in point.
What can you say about Torres? He was very ordinary up to that point. Yet, one chance, one total thump, and it arrowed into the bottom corner, beating one of the Premiership's best keepers, Gordon.

Robbie Keane? Not a great deal, he even put in a great block to deny Torres a tap-in after a Kuyt thunderbolt(!?), but I think most of us are confident that their partnership will thrive.
For many Reds, the wings is the most troubling at present. Kuyt on the right and Benayoun just isn't working. We are incredibly narrow, so easy to defend against.
So much so that two former Gillingham and Chester centre halfs, Nosworthy and Collins, shut out a £46m pound strikeforce with ease, up until the 83rd minute.
As I watched us struggle on Saturday, something dawned upon me about formation and what Rafa could be trying to do.
Perhaps the reason our manager hasn't been desperate to sign a winger over the summer is because he doesn't actually want one.

yossi sunder.jpg

Maybe some will disagree, but it seems to me that Rafa would ideally want to play, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger as three centre halfs, Dossena and Degen as wing backs, three centre mids in Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso (or Barry if that had worked out), with Torres and Keane up front.
That way, he doesn't have to give a starting place to an iffy choice like Pennant, gets width from two full backs, who half the time prefer to play as wide midfielders, hence giving us that width, has variety in a central three with a very attacking player, a very defensive player and a playmaker, two strikers always playing who can't really ever be dropped beacuse of their price tag, and he accommodates three very strong centre halfs, as he'd have to drop one otherwise.
That's my theory anyway. We never made a real effort to get hold of Silva in the summer, and the Milner move seemed more of a token gesture.
Whether Degen is good enough for a starting place, if Dossena is as attacking as we're told he is, if Babel is happy to accept coming on for 35/40 minutes as an impact player, Yossi too, these are all questions that remain to be answered.

And the hole system doesn't work without Mascherano there, he's away at the Olympics, so it's on hold for now.
That's one theory, anyhow, I'm sure there's plenty more.
On the plus side, Sunderland will be a tough place to go this year, Malbranque, Chimbonda and Diouf's Lips look like good signings, so I doubt there'll be a lot of teams taking all the points at the Stadium of Light.
But, even at this early stage, three points was a must. Bring on a rejuvenated Middlesborough.

Arbeloa continues to annoy and frustrate...what did we ever see in him?

A disappointing display but three points thanks to a world class player pulling it out of the bag. Isn't this exactly the sort of form that wins titles? Man U and Chelsea in particular have become expert at this in the past two season, and if we'd done it just 2 or 3 times last year we'd have been serious contenders.
Yes we were poor, that's undeniable, but I belive Rafa's priority (rightly so at this stage of the season) is simply to get maximum points on the board whilst being forced to play only half his first choice team, and using players who aren't suited to his preferred system.
Once the olympics are over and our defenders are fit again can anyone really see Plessis, Yossi, Kuyt, Arbeloa and Hyppia all starting? I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be Mascherano holding, Gerrard advanced, Babel on the left and maybe even Yossi 'floating' in from the right (he's not a pacy winger but he _might_ be fairly creative and hard to pick up coming in). That leaves us with a bench of Xabi, Kuyt, Pennant and either Agger or Skrtel - whoever doesn't get into the side - at last substitues who give us strength in depth and are capable of turning a game.
A rubbish display, but I'm still positive and we're 2 points up on United and Everton. I'd have taken that at 3pm on Saturday.

I'd desperately like to offer some arguments to your 'best striker in the world' claim about Torres, but I can't. He is.
Like you say, three points at Sunderland is a real achievement in perspective because they looked good.
Mascherano back in and maybe one last showcase buy (Quaresma?) and Liverpool are looking good.

Skyner,

some salient points there mate. though I don't think we can leave one of our two best centre halfs on the bench.
And on the evidence of the last two games, leaving Alonso out is not an option.
There's not a great deal of players out, only Mascherano and Babel, and for many, Babel is not a starter.

Is it odd that I'm starting to feel really sorry for Alonso?
Whatever the guy does he seems to be overlooked...agree?

Skyner said:

Alonso is really looking a worthy starter again but given Gerrard's reputation and form last year alongside Mascherano's "made for the role" qualities its hard to see how he can be accomodated.
The only 2 alternatives I can see are [1]leaving Keane on the bench playing Xabi in the middle and Gerrard just behind Torres (never going to happen given Keane's pricetag) or [2] Alonso in the middle and Gerrard on the right instead of Kuyt (might work but the constant moaning of the media would be incessant the second we drew, or heaven forbid, lost a game)

skyner,

OR,

that formation I mentioned.

Carra, Skrtel, Agger
Degen/Arbeloa, Dossena
Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano
keane, Torres

It's the only explanation for Rafa's attitude.
I actually quite like it, we get some width and player are still in positions they are comfortable with.

the most depressing thing for me watching sunderland play the ball around us with creativity and flair. that dossena has no class at all. i hope rafa sees something in him that no one else has...yet!
i'm starting to think barry is a must sign for us- plus a couple of wingers and some decent full backs! :o(

Skyner said:

Yes Luke, that does make a certain sense I suppose, although to have that much reliance on full backs they need to be truly world class going forward (Botswinga-Chelsea, Roberto Carlos in his pomp) and I'm not usre that Dossena fits the bill. Haven't seen Degen yet so can't comment on him. Might also explain why so much effort was expanded on Barry as he'd surely be most effective in the 5-3-2 that you suggest, with Gerrard in the irght berth and him on the left with the Mascherano in the middle.
Maybe this was Rafa's plan all along? That said, I'd still rather keep Xabi than spunk 18m on Barry.
