WINGERS
More talk about potential Reds flankers today
The name of Riera has once again been thrown back into the pot, along with Stuart Downing from Middlesborough.
For many though, it's not exactly setting the pulses racing.
I must confess to not knowing bucketloads about Riera.
From the clips I've seen, he seems to be a lad with a good burst of pace, nice close control, a very nice left foot, and plenty of (too many?!) step overs.
I've heard people say that his crosses aren't always on the money.
His big plus is that he's a genuine, hugging the touchline winger, who would stretch defences at a time when back lines are easily snuffing out our all-too-narrow attacks.
He didn't create any headlines when he was out on loan to Man City, which is worrying, and the suspicion is he may turn out to be another Bojinov, Bianchi or Giovanni. The list of foreign flops at Man City is endless.
If we can snap him up for no more than £10m, he might be worth a go, but when Liverpool come calling, clubs start quoting silly money.
£16m will apparently trigger a release clause for Riera. £16m? For a 26-year-old who's only played for his country five times. Scored one goal.
Those alarm bells are ringing for me. Shows that he's perhaps an international squad player at best. Let's think of an English equivalent whose got five caps for our country.
Someone like Hunt from Reading? Milner from Newcastle? Or a more accurate comparison - Richardson from Sunderland?
Saying that, a brilliant Spanish midfielder like Arteta, also 26, has only got seven appearances for his country. So, it's all relative.
With regard to Downing, I've got a bit more time for him.
He's proven in the Premiership, and seems to bale Middlesborough out on a regular basis. Scores a lot of goals, puts decent balls in.
Downing's not world class, and he seems to struggle to make the grade when playing for England, but you can have a player who's a real force in the Premiership, but who just doesn't cut it when playing internationals.
Look at Carragher. Ok, his supporters will probably argue he was never given a fair crack of the whip. But when he did play, it never seemed like the same Reds Carra, did it?
Steve Mcmahon was another one.
The Anfield Rap rightly clamoured for his inclusion in the early 90s (If anyone can, Macca can, Macca can, MACCA CAN....), but he never shone on the international stage. For God's sake, Kevin Sheedy had him off in Euro 1988!
For me, some players can torment at club level, but never have that something extra to become world beaters.
It doesn't mean they can't do a great job for us.
Again with Downing, if we make a serious bid, we can't be quoted silly money, and anything over £12m would be sheer crazy talk.
He's still young, however, just 24.
The sudden emphasis on wide men also blows my theory out the water that Rafa wants to play a wingerless formation.
After the apparent tension between Rafa, Parry and the Yanks, it will interesting to see if the head honchos remain similarly stubborn to the manager's demands, particularly if they place these two in the same 'overpriced' bracket.
In some ways I admire the Parry/Hicks/Gillett stance on Barry. They feel it's far too much money for a 27-year-old England squad player. It's their money, so they've put their foot down.
It's not as if Rafa's had no cash to spend over the summer. £20m for Keane, £6/7m for Dossena. And I'm sure there's more money besides if and when it's needed.
And after cash from the potential sales of Voronin, maybe Kuyt, and perhaps Finnan, there could be some change to play with.
This confusion is frustrating, as there's a genuine feeling that if we buy a real quality winger, we could be equipped in all areas to push Man Utd and Chelski all the way.

Not that Youtube is any kind of science, but just been watching some clips of him.
I do like what I see. Although, those clips could make Diao look good.
We need someone, and it's a difficult one, because we risk paying a lot of money on a gamble, or shrewdly saving our pennies, get nobody and then admit mid season that our lack of width os our big failing.
There's an argument for sticking with Pennant for a good 15 games and see what he delievrs.
He doesn't work if he's in and out, off the bench, starting place....ive an inkling that given an assurance, and building up his confidence could bring really good things for us.
Totally agree that the time has come for LFC to put their foot down and stop being taken for a ride in the transfer market. Parry gets a lot of bad press but if he is behand the impasse over Barry then I for one am grateful - it would be an enormous waste of cash.
I would have liked the Barry transfer to go through. The mancs have been preying it won't go through on their forum pages.
The trouble with signing a foreigner is it's a gamble plus it may (or may not) take a season before we see any results.
And they'll need to learn how to defend.
Barry would guarantee assists (three on the opening day) and I would have seen him as a Ronnie Whelanesque left midfielder as opposed to a winger (which is a position over talked about today). Some of our great teams contained no wingers.
Rafa left Valencia for the board not backing him.
He has every right to leave now for the same reasons.
If the board vetoed Barry, then why didn't they veto Keane who is older and costed more?
(For me the jury is still out for Keane (who couldn't lace beardsleys boots never mind Kenny's.And I wasn't convinced of the signing. I thought Villa would be the better option. Anyway,) Barry would have added to the squad and was never a replacement for Alonso.
So Alonso will be on the left at the weekend then?
jimmy,
whelan a left winger? not sure about that mate. wingers are essential these days. ronandlo at united virtually won them the title.
yeah, i like barry meself mate, but not at that price. with alonso playing well, and only being able to fund barry by selling him, it wouldn't b a great step up.
as for keane, of course the jury's still out. he's only played one league game for us!
Its all about balance and that’s why I agree with you on Downing, he works hard gets up and down scores his goals and get good crosses in with plenty of pace, which is exactly what we need on the left, Babel has done well at times but he has no left foot, I would gladly swap Babel for downing actually, just cant see him playing regular for us, he has the odd good game but that’s not good enough for Liverpool we have to many of these players already. Babel for a natural left footed winger is a good deal for me.
Kuyt, pennant and co in exchange for a right winger and we look stronger and balanced, cant help thinking he has Stevie G pencilled in for right wing when we get our full compliment of midfielders back.
I also agree with your comments about the owners and Parry not backing rafa on barry, rafa has made a lot of bad buys, some of his tactics really baffle me at times, for instance if he is looking to get a winger or two wouldn’t Crouch have been a good option up front ? Kuyt had a poor game Saturday, works his socks off but just aint good enough for Liverpool, he takes keane off puts Kuyt in the middle, I just don’t understand how Kuyt manages to get a game and then stay on the pitch when a sub is brought on in his position anyway.
Thought the young morrocan did well when he came on to be fair, he stretched the back four and made a lot of good runs, this allowed arbeloa to get forward a bit more to, but he should have come in in place of Kuyt. Alonso who should have played form the start did well, but why bring on a defender in the second half, rafa would point out that these tactics worked and we won the game, but if you were there to see it was obvious we were week out wide and didn’t create more than two decent chances all day, the only time there defenders stood of torres all day and the ball was in the back of the net.
After watching the Chelsea game last Sunday it was plain to see they are very strong all over the pitch, two more players would make a massive difference to us, but they have to be quality, only difference then is we have a massive squad but its made up of players that just aren’t good enough for us or probably any of the top half of the premiership.
Looks like you might have been spot n about the 5-3-2 formation Luke:
Benitez said: "That is the reason why Nabil was a key player for us at the weekend. I was saying to him 'stay wide, stay wide' and he offered the wide areas.
"Andrea Dossena was going forward in the first half and Alvaro Arbeloa in the second half but really our wingers are not players who play on the lines. We have to try through our full-backs and keep the other team back."
